Don’t Ask What…Ask Why!

When a person enters the American “Health Care System”, it’s usually because they have some symptom apart from which their life would be considerably more enjoyable.  They are looking for an answer to the “What” question: “What’s the matter with me and what do I need to do to make it go away?”  Generally the experience goes something like this:

Patient:  “Doc (or physician’s assistant, or front desk staff), every time I lay down, I get heartburn.  I’ve taken tums, Zantac and everything else I found in the heartburn aisle of the pharmacy and nothing seems to help.”

Doctor: “I’m going to refer you to a gastroenterologist”

Gastroenterologist: “We’ll run an upper GI barium study and an endoscope to look for erosions in the esophagus”

2 weeks later

Gastroenterologist: “Your test results came back and you have Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease – I’m prescribing Nexium – come back in 2 months”

Patient: “Thanks Doc, I’m glad I know what’s wrong”

Notice anything missing from this interaction? No one asks the “Why” question!  “Why do I have heartburn?”  Nor is there any discussion about diet, stress, exercise, or anything related to his lifestyle!

This is not just about heartburn either! This same script could be used for headaches, sinus issues, allergies, ear infections, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, anxiety, constipation, erectile dysfunction, FSD (look it up) or ANY OTHER DISEASE, SYMPTOM OR SYNDROME you can name!

Get clear on this – if you gave a healthy person all the medications that a sick person is on, what’s going to happen?  That’s right – they’ll get SICK!  What chances do you think you have if you take them?

Chiropractic asks – and answers – the WHY question!
