Question:  If you dropped a cinder block on your foot, what’s the first thing you must do to start the healing process?
Answer: Get the cinder block off your foot!
Sounds simple, but it’s true. Your foot won’t heal until the pressure is removed first.  And once the cinder block is removed don’t expect your foot to look or feel normal right away!  It’s going to take time to repair all that damage.  The same principle applies to your chiropractic care.
A subluxation acts like a cinder block on a nerve, causing damage and inflammation. Sometimes it can even result in pain.  Healing can occur only when the pressure is removed and kept off the nerve with regular chiropractic adjustments.  But that won’t necessarily bring instant relief.  Removing the pressure is simply the first step in a timely process.
So if you don’t feel great immediately after your adjustment, don’t be discouraged!  With regular care and time, damaged tissues will have a better potential to heal.  For now, be confident the healing process has at least started because the cinder block (subluxation) has been removed.

According to surveys, the #1 and #2 resolutions every new year are to lose weight and exercise more. One common cause of failure is injury while exercising.  Here are a few tips to keep moving in 2017:

  1.  Start Slow –  How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time.  You can’t go all out on your first try.
  2. Consult an expert – Personal trainers are the go-to people for this one.  Be sure to let them know what your goals are so they can chart a course to help you reach them.
  3. Get some nutritional advice – “Eat better” is not advice.  Find a nutritionist, either in person or online, who can help you with a plan.
  4. Get your spine and extremity joints checked by a chiropractor – restricted movement in any joint in the body will cause breakdown if you put too much stress on it.  Be sure to have a full chiropractic examination before you begin any exercise program to help you avoid injury!

The Safety and Effectiveness of All-Natural Sunscreen

sand and sunshineMany people are becoming concerned about sunscreens and the chemicals that are used to create them.  Some can cause significant long-term health issues and many studies have shown that sunscreens alone do not prevent skin cancer.  In addition, sunscreens block the beneficial UV rays that produce vitamin D in your skin – a vital process and product for nearly all 70 trillion cells in your body!

If you’re concerned about the effectiveness of all-natural sunscreen or their chemical-heavy counterparts, it might be worth mentioning that the time of day plays a big role in sunburn prevention.

Did you know that the most beneficial and safest time to be out in the sun is between the hours of 10am and 2pm!

This is when the maximum production of VitD is triggered because of the angle of the sun’s rays. The key is healthy exposure – limiting the time spent in the sun uncovered and when you’re planning to be out in direct sunlight, no matter the time of day, finding options to temper the sun’s rays is a must.  Thin, white, lightweight long-sleeved clothing like cotton or linen can act as a natural sunscreen.

There are options for homemade sunscreens that can replace the chemical-laden commercial sunscreens.  They can be as simple as crushing Vitamin C tablets and mixing the powder into your favorite lotion, or a bit more complex like this recipe I found for an all-natural sunscreen that our family is definitely going to try!
*Please note, the link to the recipe has an optional ingredient adding essential oils to the mix – we’ve been advised to remove this from the recipe, as some essential oils do not work well in connection with sun exposure.  Please do not add essential oils unless you know what you’re doing.

All-Natural Sunscreen

  • 1/2 cup almond or olive oil (can infuse with herbs first if desired)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (natural SPF 4)
  • 1/4 cup beeswax
  • 2 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide (This is a non-nano version that won’t be absorbed into the skin. Be careful not to inhale the powder). This makes a natural SPF of 20+ or more can be added.)
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons Shea Butter (natural SPF 4-5)

How to Make Natural Sunscreen

  1. Combine ingredients except zinc oxide in a pint sized or larger glass jar. I have a mason jar that I keep just for making lotions and lotion bars, or you can even reuse a glass jar from pickles, olives, or other foods.
  2. Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat.
  3. Put a lid on the jar loosely and place in the pan with the water.
  4. As the water heats, the ingredients in the jar will start to melt. Shake or stir occasionally to incorporate. When all ingredients are completely melted, add the zinc oxide, stir in well and pour into whatever jar or tin you will use for storage. Small mason jars (pint size) are great for this. It will not pump well in a lotion pump!
  5. Stir a few times as it cools to make sure zinc oxide is incorporated.
  6. Use as you would regular sunscreen. Best if used within six months.

From soccer to skydiving, sports and activity are an important part of our everyday lives, but with increased exercise, we’re at risk for more injuries.  Getting back in the game and being healthy while doing it is what we all want, but with so many treatments available to treat sports injuries, it can be difficult to find a remedy that’s non-invasive and effective.

Thankfully with the evolution of sports medicine, there is an approach that’s gaining popularity.  Phototherapy is a treatment for soft tissue injuries, providing people with pain relief and healing without pharmaceuticals and/or surgery.

When soft tissue suffers trauma, the damaged cells release chemicals that cause a natural inflammatory response in the body, resulting in swelling and pain in and around the injured area.

By using the application of lasers that pulse specific light wavelengths to injured body tissue, damaged areas will see inflammation decrease while promoting blood flow.  This treatment bolsters the body’s ability to heal the injured tissue and get you back on the court or slopes faster and more healthfully.

In addition to the repair of soft tissue, laser therapy can significantly lower the risk of arthritis associated with sports injuries. This means that over time you’ll be able to be active longer, which is a great thing!

Thet therapy is demonstrated every day with its use on elite athletes across the United States in the NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL.

Even beyond the healing effects from injury that phototherapy achieves, scientific evidence shows that there are additional benefits of laser and light therapy.  The treatment can increase blood circulation in problem spots, help develop collagen and muscle tissue, help stimulate the immune system, and give you relief from chronic pain.

Now you don’t have to limp through the pain or buy stock in a bandage company. Phototherapy treatment is a proven solution that will mean you don’t have to pop a pill every time you feel pain.

We spend a third of our lives asleep, yet, compared to our waking existence, we give our sleep time little thought.  Sleep is, of course, vital to our well-being and health, just as important as diet, exercise, and hydration.  We need the respite that sleep offers to recharge our bodies and mind, unwind from the stresses of today, and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow.  So it’s critical that we make sure we’re getting high-quality sleep and, of course, not doing our bodies any harm during sleep.

Quantity and Quality

Eight hours is often quoted as the optimal amount of sleep per night, but this varies from person to person.  Some people can get by with less time while others may need a few hours more.  But even more important than the amount of sleep we get is the quality of that sleep.  Ten hours spent tossing and turning from back or neck pain won’t be very restful, nor will you feel refreshed in the morning – just the opposite, in fact.   Good quality sleep should leave you feeling energized and ready for the new day.  This is mainly achieved during REM sleep, the deep sleep we enter when we dream.  To start and maintain the REM phase of sleep, we need to be comfortable, relaxed, and pain-free.

The Role of a Pillow

Along with a mattress, a good pillow is critical to quality, restorative sleep.  Even more importantly, the wrong pillow can cause neck and back pain and other chiropractic issues.  Any existing spine issues are exacerbated by poor pillows or sleep positioning.  When you’re comfortable and supported by the right pillow, you sleep better, deeper, and longer.

What’s the Right Pillow?

A good pillow will fit the curve of your neck, with no space between the pillow and your neck.  You don’t want the pillow to elevate your head above the top of your spine, though.  The pillow should fully support your neck while still allowing your head to fall to the same level as your spine.  If your head is perched too high on a very thick or stiff pillow then your neck and head muscles will be flexed during the night.  This results in stiff muscles, headaches, and neck aches in the morning.  The above is true whether you sleep on your back (supine) or side.  Side sleepers should keep their head and spine aligned in a neutral position.  It should be noted that sleeping on your stomach (prone) puts more stress on your spine and should be avoided.

Remember, the pillow should conform closely to you and follow the natural curve of your body.  If you find you need to place your hands between your pillow and your head as you sleep, that’s a signal that your pillow is not firm or high enough.  Before buying a new pillow, it might be helpful to try different heights by simply using rolled up towels.  This way you can adjust your pillow positioning over several nights and try out new heights without making a commitment.

A pillow should be replaced about every six months to two years.  When the time comes to purchase a new pillow, look for quality.  Remember, you’re going to be spending a third of your life on your pillow.  Although cost doesn’t always equal quality, don’t skimp on price.  Look for good materials.  Memory foam can be a great choice for many people.  Feather pillows should usually be avoided as they don’t provide much support and can exacerbate allergies.  The most important factor is comfort.  Try out any potential pillow before you buy.  Your chiropractor is an excellent source for recommendations based on your individual needs.

Weld Family Chiropractic uses the Activator Method to help its patients get the pain relief they need with no invasive procedures. The Activator Method system is an approach to chiropractic treatment that helps patients with instrument adjustment techniques designed for speedy recoveries from back injuries and other conditions. Activator devices are specifically fitted to chiropractic patients based on extensive research and clinical trials. The chiropractors at Weld Family Clinic of Chiropractic are trained in how to use the device and know which situations it works best.

The Activator device itself is a small, spring-loaded instrument. During treatment, the Activator device delivers a small impulse directly to the spine. This device doesn’t give off more than a small dose of kinetic energy in a three-millisecond pulse. This kinetic energy is used to shift vertebrae into better positions for patients without causing further injury. The device is used by chiropractors to help their patients shift their vertebrae while limiting any adverse effects or affecting their patient’s recovery process at all. The gentle touch of the Activator device keeps patients’ backs aligned without a lengthy recovery process. The device manufacturer, Activator Method, not only produces this device to chiropractic offices like Weld Family Clinic, but also in the proper training of chiropractors to use this technology effectively and safely.

Many patients have already experienced the excellent effects of the Activator device at Weld Family Clinic of Chiropractic, and the office’s staff is ready and willing to help patients suffering from back pain realign their spines in the most effective way possible.

My kids are a little different.  They laugh at drug commercials on TV.  They wonder what could possess someone to take medications after listening to the laundry list of effects

fsl-192these medications could have if you take them.  My kids are TURNED ON!  They are expressing HEALTH! They don’t dig through the medicine cabinet (as if we would have one) when they don’t feel quite right.  They get ADJUSTED!  The following sentences are words we live by.  Read them.  If they make sense, follow us!

  1. You are more than your body. There is an energy inside of you, and all living things, called your “life energy”.
  2. Everything in life is always changing, including your body. In every moment, you are either getting stronger or weaker.
  3. The strength (health) of your body at any given moment is dependent on how fully you’re expressing your life energy.
  4. 3 things are necessary to maximize the expression of life energy in your body and keep you growing consistently stronger and healthier:
    • A deliberate and positive focus
    • A healthy lifestyle
    • A clear neurological connection between your brain and your body
  5. Your spine must be properly aligned and functioning in order to maintain a clear neurological connection and the normal flow of your life energy in your body.
  6. The purpose of your chiropractic care is to help you maximize the expression of your life energy in your body.

Notice there is no mention of medications, surgery or treatment of any kind.  Chiropractic is not treatment – chiropractic is CARE!  Medicine seeks to create LESS of things – less pain, less symptoms, etc.  Chiropractic seeks to create MORE of things – more health, more wellbeing, more LIFE!  Want some?
