MSG — Is it lurking in your foods?

Monosodium Glutamate or MSG belongs to a class of chemicals called “excitotoxins” that are similar to neurotransmitters that allow your brain cells to communicate.

The problem with excitotoxins is that they can literally excite your brain cells to death.  MSG is present in nearly all processed food products, but may be disguised with a different name.  Here are a few of the other names by which MSG is often hidden in your foods:
  • Gelatin
  • Glutamate, glutamic acid
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Hydrolyzed Plant Protein
  • Yeast Extract, Autolyzed yeast
  • Textured Protein
  • Sodium Caseinate, Calcium Caseinate

Just because the label says NO MSG or does not list MSG directly, does not mean there is no MSG.  Read labels carefully and buy fresh if possible.  We all need to keep our brain cells.

Heartburn.  Most of us have had some experience with it.  Whether it was a bit of indiscretion with the jalapeno-covered nachos or a daily battle waged with diet restrictions and medications, the symptoms can range from annoying to concerning.
