Many times we get questions like: "How can Chiropractic help children?", "Is that child coming to see you?" or "Why does my child need their spine checked if they have no pain?"  My response generally goes like this, "Does a child have a spine?"  "Do they have a nervous system that controls their body?"  In Dr. Erik's health talk you learn that what we treat as chiropractors is called, "Subluxation".  You may also remember him talking about the Three T's that cause subluxation are Toxins, Trauma and Thoughts.  Here are some examples of how all age groups are confronted with these causes.

  Trauma (physical stress):

  • Birth Process
  • Numerous falls while learning to walk
  • Falling from a bike, wrestling with family
  • Sports Injuries

Thoughts (emotional stress):

  • What is the relationship of the family at home?  Do we always remember to keep our arguments from the children
  • Does the child get teased by siblings or friends?
  • Are they able to keep up with schoolwork or are they overwhelmed?
  • Peer Pressure!!!!

Toxins (chemical stress):

  • Diet (limiting refined sugars and processed foods)
  • Environmental toxins
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications
  • Caffeine

How early should I have my child checked and what good is it if their body is constantly changing?  Birth is the best time to start.  Keeping a child subluxation-free allows their body to function properly while they are growing and changing.  If a child has a subluxation, proper growth of the spine is compromised, potentially causing abnormal curvatures.  Subluxations put stress on surrounding joints and cause degenerative changes later in life.

Chiropractic has been shown to be very effective for numerous childhood conditions such as colic, asthma, ear infections, allergies, bowel problems, scoliosis and many more.  Restoring proper function to the body through proper nervous system function early on in life gives a child the best chance to not only resolve an existing problem, but also avoid problems later in life.

If you have any questions about chiropractic for children or would like additional information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Chiropractic and Cancer

Cancer is an ugly, devastating disease and there is no pleasant way to discuss it.  On the surface, chiropractic may seem like an unlikely player in the cancer-care circle.  When we look a bit deeper, however, we find that chiropractic could have applications throughout all levels of care.  I will break our discussion down into three separate categories:  Palliative/Hospice care, Active Treatment and Prevention.

Signs of Subluxation in Children

While trying to choose a topic for my article, I realized that I have discussed the importance of chiropractic care for kids, but I have not described the signs and symptoms of subluxations.  These signs vary with age and I will discuss what to look for in each age category.

Heartburn - put down the Tums and step away slowly

Heartburn.  Most of us have had some experience with it.  Whether it was a bit of indiscretion with the jalapeno-covered nachos or a daily battle waged with diet restrictions and medications, the symptoms can range from annoying to concerning.
