The Truth Behind Chiropractic And Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

When it comes to carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), chiropractic and traditional medicine offer very different treatment methods and often have different viewpoints on treatment modalities. Chiropractic views the patient as a whole entity and looks for subluxations of the nervous system to explain symptoms and determine treatment approaches. On the other hand, mainstream medicine uses scientific treatment procedures and aims to treat the symptoms using medication, machines and direct testing as a first approach. If you were given a chance to choose between the two, what would be your pick? Choosing which approach to consider for treatment is a decision every patient faces when looking for carpal tunnel syndrome treatment.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common type of nerve injury a person can develop that is a result of a compression in the median nerve. When there is swelling in any tissue in the carpal tunnel, the tunnel cannot expand to accommodate the swelling which in turn builds up pressure causing painful symptoms and numbness. CTS can also result in direct external nerve compression, edema, inflammation, and occasionally tumors or masses.

The treatment for CTS can come in two different forms, traditional surgery or natural/chiropractic treatment.  Natural or chiropractic treatment should always be your first option before considering any type of surgery.  Some basic alternative treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome include:

  • Resting the affected hand and wrist
  • Avoiding activities that may worsen symptoms
  • Immobilizing the wrist in a splint to avoid further damage from twisting or bending
  • Applying cool packs to help reduce swelling from inflammation

If these approaches do not work, CTR or carpal tunnel release may be a better option.  CTR is a proven mainstream medical procedure and can offer some success in treating CTS.  Again, this approach should only be used as a last resort.
