What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a philosophy, science and art of things natural; a system of adjusting the segments of the spinal column by hand only, for the correction of the cause of dis-ease.     -D.D. Palmer

Dis-ease (a departure from normal body function) is a state in which the body is not functioning as it should.  Pressure on and/or irritation of the nerves exiting the spinal cord through the vertebral column can distort, disrupt or otherwise alter the signals from the brain to the body and body to brain.  This disrupts the body’s natural balance, known as homeostasis, and forces the body to compensate by increasing or decreasing other functions. This further disrupts the balance and begins a downward spiral toward disease and eventual death.

A deduction based on 2 scientific principles can explain the impact of nervous system interference on your health.

  1. The brain is the master coordination and control system of the body
  2. The body is self-healing and self-regulating

Therefore, anything that would interfere with the brain’s ability to control and coordinate the body must necessarily interfere with the body’s ability to heal and self-regulate.

We live our lives through our nervous system.  If your nervous system does not work right, you do not work right.  When you do not work right, you are not healthy.

Rather than chasing symptoms with costly drugs and surgery, chiropractors seek to turn on the inborn healing potential that exists within us all.  Drugs and surgery mask symptoms, allowing the cause to go unchecked.  Chiropractic honors the inborn healing power of the body, restoring balance, thereby restoring health.

Chiropractic and Cancer

Cancer is an ugly, devastating disease and there is no pleasant way to discuss it.  On the surface, chiropractic may seem like an unlikely player in the cancer-care circle.  When we look a bit deeper, however, we find that chiropractic could have applications throughout all levels of care.  I will break our discussion down into three separate categories:  Palliative/Hospice care, Active Treatment and Prevention.

Heartburn - put down the Tums and step away slowly

Heartburn.  Most of us have had some experience with it.  Whether it was a bit of indiscretion with the jalapeno-covered nachos or a daily battle waged with diet restrictions and medications, the symptoms can range from annoying to concerning.
