Expectation and Its Role in Health and Healing

Expectation plays a very significant role in the health and healing arena – so much so that I would say it is the primary driver of the healing process.  When one expects to improve – expects to be well, they go farther, faster up the functional scale.  This expectation is why the placebo is effective – interestingly, only in humans.

Frustration, however, is the primary destroyer of expectation.  We get discouraged when things do not happen at the time or the speed we want them to.  Many patients come to our office with an expectation of miraculous results with an adjustment or two.  Some have had those expectations fulfilled.  The vast majority, however, see their results happen at a bit slower pace primarily due to the fact that 20, 30 or 40 year old problems do not resolve overnight.

As a doctor/health coach it is my job to help guide the expectation-setting process based on my assessment of the patient’s position on the health spectrum.   Symptoms aside, my recommendations and care are designed to change the patient’s perspective about health, healing and life.  Patients most often come into the office with something they don’t want anymore.  If one constantly focuses on what they have and don’t want, they’ll get more of that.  If we shift their focus to what they don’t have, but really want, i.e. health, they will take more steps in that direction.  Its changing and expanding VISION that changes lives!

We are committed to educating and inspiring individuals and families to cultivate health and healing throughout their lives.
