Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ – Matthew 22:37-39
Jesus’ words in the “greatest commandment” here are clear – God is first. What isn’t so clear, though, is the second. What if you don’t love yourself? Do you really want to “love your neighbor” like you don’t love yourself? This may sound selfish, but you have to love yourself before you can love others. You have to take the log out of your own eye before you worry about the speck in your neighbor’s. If you don’t take care of yourself physically, emotionally and spiritually, your tank will be empty and you will have nothing to give. Love your neighbor as yourself.
